Jeep Tire Care Tips
How to Clean Jeep Tires
Clean tires will not only make your Jeep look amazing on the Reidsville, NC roads, but it will also make the tires last longer by limiting corrosion or damage. The dirt and grime buildup can also make the wheel finishes peel and the rims more porous, causing tire pressure leaks. If you want to avoid having to replace your tires constantly or getting into dangerous situations, you can clean your tires easily in these 4 steps:
- Get all the materials you’ll need before you start. You will need a bucket, microfiber towels, a hose and spray nozzle, a soft-bristled brush, and a non-abrasive cleaning agent of your choice. You can use dish soap, warm water, and wheel wax, but if you want a natural agent, use a 70/30 mix of white vinegar and baking soda. If the tires need a deep clean, be sure to grab a light-duty pressure washer, a waxing mitt, and a wheel brush.
- Rinse off any loose dirt or debris with your spray nozzle. Use it at various angles to get all of the dirt from the interior of the rim.
- Clean and scrub the surface carefully. After you’ve got the top layer of the dirt off, you will want to get to the rest of the layers.
- Start from the tires and then move to the wheels.
- Use your bristled brush to scrub the tire with warm water and dish soap.
- If there’s any stuck-on grime, let the soap mixture sit on the tire for a few minutes to help soften things up before you scrub and rinse.
- Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spritz onto the wheels to melt away stains on the surface of the wheel.
- Grab your smaller brush for spots that are harder to get to.
- Once you’re done, dry the tire and wheel completely with a clean, microfiber towel.
- Add wax for a shiny finish. While this is totally optional and you can stop once your tires are clean, you can go the extra mile with wax. If you are, apply a cream or paste wax with a waxing mitt and follow the instructions for that specific wax. Give it a final polish with a microfiber cloth.
How to Check Jeep Tire Wear
The Penny Test
- Insert the penny with Lincoln head-first into a tire tread groove.
- Check if Lincoln’s head is covered and no longer visible between the grooves.
- If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tire treads are 2/32 inches deep or less and it’s time to replace them.
- Repeat this process on all four tires and in multiple locations on each tire to get the most accurate results.
Tread Depth Gauge
Buy a tread depth gauge from any auto parts store near Danville. Then, insert the probe into the shallowest tread groove and press the top bar of the gauge flat against the tire to see the treadwear rating.
Tread Wear Bars
Most tires have tread wear indicator bars built into them, and you can find them at the bottom of the tread grooves in multiple locations across the tires. If the bars are flush with the surrounding tire ribs, this means that the tread depth has reached 2/32 of an inch.
What’s the Jeep Recommended Tire PSI?
The Jeep recommended tire PSI varies depending on the model, wheel, and tire, and the range goes anywhere from 29 to 43 PSI. For the correct PSI for your model, you should consult your owner’s manual. If your SUV isn’t equipped with the original manufacturer’s tire, reach out to our service technicians and we can help you figure out what’s the suggested PSI.
